Trends in Estate Planning

Presented by Craig Stephens, Sarah Johnston, & George Gaskin

Craig Stephens is a partner at Arlington Family Offices and serves a Senior Wealth and Tax Advisor.  Craig is also a member of the Fiduciary Oversight Committee for Arlington’s Trust Company.  Craig takes his experience as a fifteen-year adjunct law school professor in Estate Planning, Estate and Gift Tax and Probate Law to help teach Arlington families how to structure a plan that focuses on capital preservation and tax efficiency.  Craig focuses on multi-generational trust planning and family business succession planning for many of Arlington’s families.

Prior to joining Arlington, Craig helped design estate plans for 22 years as a partner in the law firm of Sirote & Permutt, PC, now known as Dentons Sirote, P.C., where Craig also served on the firm’s management committee.  Craig is a member of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (“ACTEC”), and he serves as a Board Member for the Mountain Brook City Schools Foundation and GirlSpring, Inc.  Craig received his undergraduate degree from Stetson University, his J.D. from Cumberland School of Law, and his LL.M. in Tax from the University of Florida Levin College of Law.

Sarah Johnston is a shareholder with the law firm of Dentons Sirote PC, where she practices in the trusts, estates and wealth preservation section of the firm. Ms. Johnston assists clients with planning for traditional estates, sophisticated wealth transfers, business succession, blended families, incapacity, and special needs planning. She believes that careful listening, thorough advice, which includes tax considerations, and strategic implementation are key to achieving a client’s objectives. As part of her probate practice, she assists with establishing guardianships and conservatorships. Ms. Johnston is a member of the American Bar Association, the Alabama State Bar, and the Montgomery Estate Planning Council. She is an Accredited Estate Planner (AEP ®) and earned her B.S., magna cum laude, from Auburn University, her J.D. from the University of Alabama, and her LL.M., summa cum laude, in taxation from the University of Alabama.

George Gaskin is a Birmingham native who graduated from Vanderbilt University (B.A.) and Vanderbilt University Law School (J.D.).  He joined the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham in 2019.  As the Director of Gift Planning, he is responsible for stewarding the professional advisor community, working with donors who wish to leave estate or complex gifts to the Community Foundation, and drafting and reviewing fund agreements and internal policies.  Before starting his position with the state’s largest and oldest community foundation, George practiced law as an estate and elder planning attorney.  He serves on the boards of the Alabama Association of Charitable Gift Planners and the Highlands United Methodist Church Child Development Center. George lives in Homewood with his wife, Mattie, and daughters, Loula and Bea.
